The cost will vary depending on the type of course and which area you choose to take it. If you pay the fixed penalty fine or send your driving licence to the Conditional Offer Unit, you will be unable to attend a speed awareness course. A speed awareness course (The National Speed Awareness Course) is a driver retraining course which is offered to drivers who have committed speeding offences in the alternative to either a Fixed Penalty Notice for speeding or formal prosecution before a Magistrates’ Court.

In a search for car insurance I called Admiral. The agent asked if I had been on any speed awareness courses – I wasn’t quick enough to decline to answer. When I said “yes” the quote increased by £50. The whole point of the courses is that they are an alternative to prosecution – and no record is kept. My course provider, DriveTech, says it does not share details as it is information not in the public domain. JP,by email
As far as we know, Admiral is the only insurer that asks this – certainly the majority of other big-name firms only ask for convictions. Admiral says its data shows that drivers who attend a speed awareness course are more likely to have an accident in the following 12 months than those who committed no offence. “A speed awareness course will impact the premium, but shouldn’t impact it as much as a speeding endorsement,” it says.
It is clear – if you have attended a course during the year you should probably avoid Admiral come renewal time.
Note: always be truthful, but only say that you’ve been on such a course if you are asked. Are readers aware of any other insurer doing this? Email the usual address.

I have just been asked by a friend how often you an take the afore mentioned course?
They took one a circa two years back in Avon and Sommerset and have just been offered one following a whoopsie in Thames Valley? The seem to think you can only take them every 3years or so?
Obviously one doesn't aim to take them ever but hey it happens
So my questions are
A; is there a restriction on how often
B; is there Any way one policeregion would know about you doing one in another?

If I’m recorded driving over the speed limit again will I be able to go on another course?
Drivers are only able to attend a speed awareness course once every three years. If you are recorded speeding again you will only be eligible to attend a further course if more than three years has elapsed since the date of your previous course.

(I did one last April and it was explained this had just been set in place.. s'ok, 5yrs since my previous )
I have checked my friend has been offered the course, so im thinking they must be wrong about their last course date, and should accept the course.
Any further info greatly received.

I know of two drivers in Lancashire who both attended courses two years apart, one of which was well outside of the guidelines speed wise - but was still offered a course!
